The translation industry is continuously growing! It is predicted to keep its average 7% growth till 2028. (Source: The 2024 NIMDZI 100 report) Does this mean more translation jobs for you? If not, then you surely need to take some steps to get more jobs in the coming year.

Before we dive in, here is my two cents of truth about getting translation jobs. Translators earn their money the hard way. If you don’t have passion for words you may not enjoy this journey so much. To be a successful translator, you will need to be consistent in your effort, persistent in your actions, and be patient in getting results. You will also be able to understand your unique situation and improvise your strategy to get more jobs.

With that said, let’s dive into my 9 tips to help you get more jobs in the coming year!

Be in the Right Places

To attract consistent work and build a successful career, it’s essential to be visible in the right places. This means actively seeking out opportunities and networking with potential clients in the translation industry. By strategically positioning yourself in the right environments, you can increase your chances of landing lucrative translation projects and establishing yourself as a trusted professional.

Tip 1. Master One Freelance Platform

Mastering one freelance platform can be a highly effective strategy for generating consistent translation work and achieving your financial goals. By focusing on a single platform, understanding its intricacies, and building a strong profile and reputation, you can increase your chances of success and establish yourself as a reliable and sought-after translator.

  • Choose a Platform and Stick with It: One of the fastest ways to get more clients is joining freelancing platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, Fiverr, or the likes. You can also You probably have joined multiple platforms already. Stick with this platform for at least your first $10,000 in earnings to allow yourself time to build a strong profile and reputation.
  • Understand the Platform’s Intricacies: Each platform has its unique features, algorithms, and best practices. Take the time to learn how your chosen platform works, including how to optimize your profile, find suitable projects, and communicate effectively with clients.
  • Avoid Common Pitfalls: Many freelancers encounter challenges when starting on freelance platforms, such as getting scammed, violating platform policies, or struggling to find their first job. Learn from others’ mistakes and take steps to avoid common pitfalls.

Tip 2. Keep Partnering With Translation Agencies 

Translation agencies can provide you with a steady stream of projects due to their long-standing client relationships, allowing you to maintain a consistent workload. Moreover, working with agencies exposes you to a diverse range of projects across various industries, expanding your experience and expertise.  

  • Join Agencies as a Freelance Translator: Apply to join reputable translation agencies as a freelance translator. Be prepared to take any required tests or assessments to demonstrate your skills and qualifications.
  • Diversify Your Partnerships: Work with a variety of translation agencies, from boutique firms to large language service providers (LSPs). This will increase your chances of finding consistent work and exposure to different types of projects.
  • Track Your Agencies: Maintain a spreadsheet or database to track your interactions with agencies, including their contact information, project history, payment terms, and performance. This will help you identify the agencies that are most beneficial to your career. Also you want to know with whom you are partnered with and who has a red flag. 
  • Focus on Quality Relationships: Prioritize building meaningful relationships with agencies that align with your professional goals and values. Avoid working with agencies that do not adhere to your standards for pricing, professionalism, or ethical practices.

Tip 3. Be in Your Network

By actively participating in your network, building relationships, and seeking referrals, you can increase your visibility, attract new clients, and stay ahead of the competition.  Build and nurture your professional network so you can get ahead in your career.

Remember, the translation industry is constantly evolving, and staying ahead of the curve is key to long-term success.
